School of Marriage
The School of Marriage project seeks to develop a new paradigm for Christian ‘marriage education’ in local churches. Instead of focusing on ‘marriage counseling’--which normally involves professional counselors intervening in marriages that are already deeply in trouble—School of Marriage staff want to see local churches committed to preventative ‘marriage education’ that helps marriages avoid falling into serious difficulties in the first place.
Dr. Paul Olson, School of Marriage Project Director, is a well known Christian psychologist and marriage and family therapist. His book, ‘The Distinctively Christian Marriage,’ has been widely read and used as a basic text in many churches and seminaries. He’s considered one of the founders of the ‘marriage education’ movement.
Dr. Olson and his project colleagues—including pastors, medical professionals and other therapists—are creating a variety of communication tools and practical models that can be used by local churches to carry on effective marriage education. They will test these tools and models in a limited number of local churches first, then, if results are promising, attempt to spread the use of these tools and models more widely. SOM’s ultimate goal? Helping to strengthen Christian marriages by strengthening local churches’ ability to put those marriages on a solid foundation.
Visions Made Viable acts as the long term fiscal and legal sponsor for SOM and provides administrative and consulting support. We’re glad to be able to support Dr. Olson and his partners in such a potentially significant effort.
