Proyecto Dar a Luz
Proyecto Dar a Luz is a short term project seeking to publicize and raise funds for the work of Alice Huerte, an indigenous Nicaraguan midwife and a pioneer in health care among poor rural women. Better known as 'Mama Licha,' Alice lives in the highlands of Nicaragua where she opened a clinic years ago in her own home dedicated to supporting poor women before, during and after pregancy.
Alice's effective and appropriate methods have become a model for scores of rural midwives that Alice has trained to serve their own communities throughout Nicaragua. She's become an iconic figure in her own country as she's served tirelessly, making do with few resources and working in the midst of civil war and various natural catastrophes over the years. In recent years, Yale School of Nursing has begun sending their students with an interest in international rural women's health for rotations with 'Mama' where they can learn from her up close.
Rebecca Pratt, a graduate of Stanford University and Proyecto Dar a Luz's director, will raise monies that will allow Mama Licha to expand her clinic and purchase needed medical equipment. In addition, she will write a book telling the story of Mama Licha in order to spread her model and influence more widely. Mama Licha personally selected Rebecca to write the book and has invited her to live for 6 months in Nicaragua at the clinic.
We're delighted to support Rebecca and Mama by offering fiscal sponsorship to Dar a Luz (a Spanish expression that literally means 'to give light' but idiomatically means 'to give birth') along with administrative support and consulting. We're glad to help spread the word about this remarkable woman and her inspiring story.
