Help Kids of Africa
Help Kids of Africa (http://helpkidsofafrica.org) will create a new, innovative orphanage in Mombasa, Kenya by early 2011.
Mombasa, like so many African cities, has been devastated by HIV/AIDS. Thousands of orphans live on the streets. Though some orphanages exist, the need far outstrips the supply.
Large institutional orphanages are the norm in Africa as elsewhere. Help Kids of Africa seeks to create a new, more intimate model of an orphanage that will allow a smaller group of children--no more than 15--to receive individual attention and service. Along with creating a family style approach, Help Kids of Africa is developing a support model that will allow the orphanage to be sustained by a relatively small group of financial supporters who have a close, relational connection to the children.
Help Kids of Africa, a team of volunteers from the US, Australia and Kenya, will work closely with Kenyan leadership to develop the first Help Kids of Africa orphanage. If their model is successful, they hope to open a series of orphanages in Mombasa and other African cities.
