Children Growing: The Watoto Project of Northern Tanzania
Children Growing: The Watoto Project of Northern Tanzania provides financial, advisory and technical support to existing, local non-governmental organizations (NGO's) in northern Tanzania whose purpose is to significantly enhance the lives of orphans and other vulnerable children. Children Growing seeks to promote the intellectual, physical, social and emotional development of these at risk kids.
Sue Golding, CG's project director, leads a team of professionals from the fields of government, education and business who want to make a very specific positive impact on the lives of vulnerable children and desperately poor mothers and other caregivers in Tanzania.
Sue and her colleagues have developed a close working partnership with two remarkable leaders, Tamimu Mayyutta and Pamela Kimario, who started a small orphanage in the town of Moshi, Tanzania, at the foot of Mt. Kilimanjaro. Through their efforts SWIWSCO (www.swiwsco.org) now provides a very supportive home for 35 orphaned children. All the children, in addition to another 10 who live at home with a mother or other caregiver, are in school thanks to SWIWSCO's support. The home has initiated several sustainable food projects and is developing other programs that will generate income to create self-sufficiency. SWIWSCO and Children Growing believe empowering women is a key to effecting positive societal and familial change and to improving the lives of an even greater number of children. By presenting women with opportunities for education and employment, they can become self confident, self sufficient and better able to provide for their families. Once the funding stream supporting the children's program is stabilized, SWIWSCO and Children Growing will focus on strategies for a women's development program.
Children Growing will begin its involvement in northern Tanzania by directly supporting SWIWSCO and then branching out to serve other innovative local efforts like it in the years to come.
Visions Made Viable is delighted to help Sue and her team through fiscal sponsorship, administrative support, consulting, and incubator services leading to Children Growing becoming an independent non profit in a few years.
