Be the Change: Kenya
Be the Change: Kenya offers management skills training, executive coaching, and an ongoing local advisory board to indigenous leaders of orphanages and other anti-poverty NGO's serving the poor in squatter slums in and around Nairobi, Kenya. In addition, BTCKE trains key youth leaders in these same slums to organize their communities in support of BTCKE's local partner organizations. By strengthening the capacity of local nonprofits and deepening their influence in squatter slum communities, BTCKE aims to equip their partners to alleviate poverty and bring about desperately needed social change. The final goal of BTCKE is to turn over the entire project to local leadership. Take a look at their website at http://www.bethechangekenya.org
Natalie Elaine Finstad and Sarah Lilian Welch, the co-founders and co-directors of BTCKE, live in Nairobi and have developed extensive local partnerships and networks that put them in a unique position to make the project work effectively. Natalie and Sarah--both seasoned community organizers with administrative and management experience in the nonprofit world--recognize the tremendous disconnect between outside 'aid organizations' and the people who live in the sprawling shanty towns that surround cities like Nairobi. In many cases, aid workers are unwilling to even venture into these slum communities. Natalie and Sarah began BTCKE determined to bring appropriate resources directly and intimately to the people who need them the most and who can best bring about change: the key local leaders and organizations ready to make a difference.
